One great way to get over your heartache is to share you pain. You know the old adage, a ‘problem shared is a problem halved’? Well that’s true here on SYBD even more than most places…
Most people in life just want to be heard and understood – when going through a break up it’s amplified ten-fold.
So on that note I admit, I am a fan of telling your story to the press, but only if you’re not doing it to diss an ex – so read on to learn from my, sometimes painful, experiences when it comes to press…
THEA’S PRESS TIPS:
1) ASK WHY?
Check your motivation for doing a tell all piece. It can, if done right, truly help others who are going through the pain.
It’s what I call positive revenge or a way of making lemonade from life’s lemons.
I’ve never been one to deliberately bad mouth my exes – after all they were great guys or I wouldn’t have been with them. Any of them. Frankly some of them just ended it bad…they weren’t bad guys.
Some press coverage that told my story – back in the early days – was less than favorable toward them though. Things were misquoted (always a danger when speaking to press) and some feelings were hurt. I learned the hard way and had to get wise.
2) APPROVAL BEFORE PRINT
Now if I speak to the press – I usually ask them to send a copy to me before it goes to print, and if they won’t do that – then at least ask them to READ it to you over the phone for sake of clarity and getting facts right.
If they won’t do that then don’t speak to them. (As I say, I learned the hard way and have some pretty awful press coverage as a result…not for a long time though!)
3) SHOW ME THE MONEY!
The other great thing about Positive Revenge is that you can make hundreds of pounds (sometimes). I have over the years and it’s fab…
Stories can range from around one hundred pounds to five hundred poundsĀ – and theoretically even more if it’s a truly great story.
4) REFER TO # 1
Really consider your motive for speaking. Are you doing it to out of hurt, anger, bitterness, pettiness, nastiness, etc? Then, it may be too soon to do so. You may end up saying things you’ll later regret (Been there…) and your words will be in print for millions to read…
5) KARMA KARMA KARMA
Remember what you do comes bouncing back to you. Put out good – get good back. Put out the other…well, you know…
STILL THINK YOU’RE READY TO CASH IN?
So on that note, if you’re in the UK, you’re willing to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and you’re up for being photographed – you could potentially make some money and help some other people who read it – in the process.
Details of an email sent to me this week by a UK journalists are below:
Hi Thea,
I discovered your brilliant website yesterday and I’d love to hear more about you and why you set it up. I’m a journalist of many years standing, mainly for women’s weekly magazines ( I used to be editor of That’s Life! until leaving to have my kids).I’m looking for case studies – if people are prepared to be named and pictured they would of course be paid (usually generously) if published. they would need to be UK-based and can’t have appeared in a magazine before.
My number is 07564 214954 & email is christabel@heartfeatures.co.uk
Many Thanks,
Good luck people – and be sure to mention SYBD in the article as we’ve not had any cool press in the past few months (that I know of at any rate). Thanks x
