My Breakup Story by Thea Newcomb
Updated 2025: In our lives, most of us face the sting of a breakup, and no two people heal the same way. The duration of a relationship doesn’t always match the time it takes to heal from it. A two-month fling can hurt more than a two-year slow fade. A “soulmate” connection can vanish in a single phone call. Rejection hits universally – and here’s how it hit me.
“But I thought you were the one…”
I’ve had a number of relationships, but I’d say I’ve only truly been in love once. That particular man convinced me, completely, that he was my soulmate. I believed it until the day he called me long-distance (on my bill, naturally) to say it was over.
We’d been together for years. He was consistently kind and attentive. There were no signs, no drama, no growing distance. We’d just moved into a new home, a place I thought we’d build a life. And then suddenly, I was alone on the other end of a phone line, stunned.
The Tornado Stage
I cried for days. Literally. The first two days I couldn’t eat or sleep. On the third day, my friend Jenn, a nurse, came round and made me eat something, then sat with me for hours, unsure what to say. I kept asking, “Are you sure? I can’t believe this is happening to me.” It felt like I was trapped in a nightmare I couldn’t wake up from.
Even weeks later, I couldn’t reconcile how someone who claimed to love me, like no one else ever had, could just toss me away. It shocked everyone who knew us as a couple.
Mental Anguish
The emotional aftermath was relentless. I was angry at him for pulling the rug out from under me, and angry at myself for giving him so much power over my happiness. I felt grief, rage, numbness, often all in the same hour. He moved on fast, while I was still drowning in disbelief. It was the deepest emotional pain I’d ever known. And I’d been through a divorce already, this was worse.
Sense-Making: The “Why?” Phase
I questioned everything.
How did I not see it coming?
How could I be the last to know?
Were we even in the same relationship?
I was embarrassed, humiliated, and completely blindsided. The relationship had felt so strong: good sex, great communication, a real friendship. But suddenly, I was looking back at it all like it was a lie. I felt shattered. I kept asking, What did I do to deserve this?
The Competition
He had someone new almost immediately. Someone to cuddle, kiss, cook with. I had nothing. I’d lost my home, my routine, my confidence. I tortured myself imagining them doing the things we used to do, in my bed, our car, our garden. Life felt so unfair.
The Fears
I was terrified to be alone.
What if no one ever loved me again?
What if I never trusted anyone again?
What if this broken version of me was permanent?
Those questions haunted me in the darkest hours. But the one that echoed most was: What now? Go back to California? Stay in Scotland? Look for a job? A flat? A way to feel like myself again?
The Mad Crazies
Revenge fantasies helped, a little. Friends offered ideas: cut his clothes, hide fish in the floorboards, lace his shampoo with hair remover. But that energy didn’t last. Eventually, I chose a different kind of “retaliation.”
I dyed my hair. Bought new clothes. Started working out again. Had a couple of flings – not to hurt him, but to remind myself I was still desirable. And slowly, strangely, forgiveness began to creep in. For him. Even for her.
Acceptance & Moving On
About six weeks in, I felt something I hadn’t expected: relief.
I was so glad we hadn’t gotten married.
For the first time in a while, I felt hope. I started viewing the breakup as a gift. A chance to become truly independent. It was a hard-won shift in perspective, but a life-changing one.
I no longer wished for his karma to crash into him. I didn’t care whether he was happy or miserable. I just wanted to feel whole again — and eventually, I did. Piece by piece, I rebuilt my life. And So You’ve Been Dumped was born.
If you’re reading this and feeling like your world has ended, please know this:
You will get through it.
You’ll feel angry, sad, numb, maybe even vengeful. You’ll wonder if it’ll ever stop hurting.
It will.
You’ll grow stronger. Wiser. Sharper. More you.
Because heartbreak doesn’t just break us – it remakes us.
Thanks for being here.
