SYBD Breakup Short Stories #3: How Red Can the Flags Get?
They were on and off for over a decade. Round one ended. Round two fizzled. By round three, Lady Red Flag saw the writing on the wall – or rather, the red flags flapping in the emotional wind. In a final moment of clarity (and likely exhaustion), she tapped out via text from a train. This is her story.
Name or pseudonym:
Lady Red Flag
Location:
UK
Occupation:
Massage Therapist
Age:
50
Relationship Length:
On and off for 13 years
When did it end?:
Let’s just say the Scarlet Pimpernel was easier to find than he was in the final weeks. Dismissive. Avoidant. Designed to repel. So I called it – via text – and told him, “Congratulations, it worked.”
Description of the Relationship:
Passionate. Confusing. Intense. And eventually…utterly stale. The kind where you keep trying to resuscitate something that should have been buried long ago. In the end, I wasn’t even on the back burner. I was off the stove entirely. The relationship drained me. His attention was something I had to earn, maintain, and eventually give up chasing.
Categorise it in 5 words or less:
Passionate, confusing, intense, eventually stale
How are you better?
My life is now completely arsehole free. Gloriously so. Going back for that final round gave me the clarity I needed. I saw – in real-time – how little I mattered to him. And how much peace there is in letting that kind of chaos go. Exhausting someone into staying isn’t love. It’s emotional gymnastics.
Tips for the newly broken-hearted?
It will get better. I promise. The day you realise it wasn’t a loss but a lucky escape? That’s the day you begin to get your power back. And you will feel stronger for it.
If your breakup were a movie what would it be called?
How Red Can the Flags Get?
What was your breakup line?
“I just can’t give you what you want.”
(Translation: I’m emotionally unavailable and still want the perks of your presence without any accountability.)
Write a Wee Letter to Your Ex (100 words or less):
Dear Mr Red Flag,
Hopefully you’ve stopped lying to everyone. Maybe stick to dating other dismissive avoidants with a porn habit. I’ve got no room left for energy vampires. Thanks (I guess?) for reopening the shop one last time, but I regret being so available to you. You weren’t worth the time, the effort, or the battery percentage. Entertaining you was exhausting — and I’m finally free.
Conclusion
Sometimes the best closure is no longer being a side character in someone else’s circus. Especially when the ringleader’s missing half the time.
