SYBD Breakup Short Stories #2: When the Playlist Ends
Tom thought he’d found his forever person. They made playlists for each other, sent long voice notes, and even joked about their future cat’s name. But for all the thoughtful gestures and chemistry, something never quite clicked – at least, not for both of them. When the music stopped, Tom was left with silence, confusion, and a killer breakup playlist. This is his story.
Name or pseudonym:
Tom A.
Location:
Brighton, UK
Occupation:
Audio Producer
Age:
34
Relationship Length:
Just over a year
When did it end?:
About six months ago
Description of the Relationship:
It was a fast burn. We matched on Hinge, and within a few weeks we were inseparable. She’d send me Spotify links at midnight, and I’d wake up to voice notes about dreams she had. It felt deep and effortless. But somewhere along the way, it started feeling one-sided. I was making playlists, booking weekends away, planning future trips — she was always “busy.” Her replies slowed, her eyes drifted, and I could feel her pulling away, even as we lay side by side. I think she liked the idea of us more than the reality.
Categorise it in 5 words or less:
Romanticised but unreciprocated love
How did the Relationship End?:
She said she “needed space to figure herself out,” but two weeks later she was posting selfies with someone new. She unfollowed me, then re-followed. I blocked her. Best decision I ever made.
How are you better?:
I finally learned that I don’t need to convince someone to stay. If they want to go, I hold the door.
Tips for the newly broken-hearted?:
Mute their socials. Make a playlist just for you. Let time and your friends do the healing. And get some fresh air.
If your breakup were a movie what would it be called?:
The Ghost in Track 7
What was your breakup line?:
“You’re amazing… but I’m just not in the right headspace for a relationship right now.” Classic.
Write a Wee Letter to Your Ex (100 words or less):
We had our moments, I won’t deny that. But I deserved someone who didn’t treat me like a side quest. You didn’t owe me forever, but you owed me honesty. Thanks for showing me what I want — and what I won’t tolerate again. The playlists are still fire though.
