SYBD Breakup Short Stories: Ally’s “No Good for You” Exit

Heartbreak doesn’t care how old you are or how long it lasted. When someone leads you on and lets you down, it stings, especially when you thought it might actually go somewhere.

Some of my shortest relationships were harder to get over than the long ones, and I know I’m not alone in that. No judgement here. Meet Ally.

Name: Ally
Age: 18–24
Location: UK
Job Title: Retail Assistant
Relationship Length: 2 months
Time Since Breakup: 6 months ago
Film That Sums It Up: 500 Days of Summer
Emotional Summary: An exhausting, draining emotional roller coaster
Current Feelings: “I’m relieved it’s over, but it’s hard not to think about what could’ve been.”

The Breakup Line:

“I still like you, but I’m not looking for a relationship right now. I enjoyed hanging out with you and felt myself around you but I’m just no good for you.”

Classic. It’s the softly-softly ego-soothing cop-out, isn’t it? The “I’m doing this for your own good” gambit. We’ve seen it countless times in the SYBD archives, and it never gets any easier to hear.

Ally’s Parting Words to Him:

“I think you need to grow up and get a grip. As an older man, you shouldn’t be wasting the little time we have on this planet hurting and using people. If you think your parents would be ashamed of your behaviour, don’t act like that.”

Oof. Straight to the point, and fair play. It’s hard enough navigating love in your late teens and early twenties without some emotionally unavailable man-child playing the tortured philosopher.

Ally’s Advice to Others:

“Don’t let a man mess you about. Know your worth, my lovelies.”

Mic drop.
